So, last year for my son's 4th birthday my mom gave Madden a Nintendo DS. For a kid, he's quite the little gamer. He gets it honestly from his dad. He probably plays video games more than I'd like (between the Wii, xbox, super nintendo and VSmile motion) but he's an incredibly bright, well mannered, and for the most part, well behaved :) kid, so I deal with it. We do monitor his time on the system and usually his dad plays with him or we watch his "progress" through different levels. He really feels a sense of achievement when he "beats" a level.
Anyway, reason for my blog is not the "justify" my son's gaming....lol... but to RAVE on Nintendo customer service. Like I said, one year ago my son received a Ninendo DS as a gift. He faithfully played this system for that year. In the car, on long trips, after "school" almost everyday. It has been dropped, stickers placed all over the outside of it, and so on. Right before his birthday this year, it stopped working. Nothing happened out of the ordinary, it just wouldn't come on. I thought about chalking it up to one year of good service but then someone told me to call customer service, so I did.
The customer service rep was really friendly on the phone. Asks me a few simple questions about the system. One question, seemingly the most important, I couldn't answer. He asked me the serial number and it had been rubbed off the back. It is printed on a sticker on the back of the system and after a year, it was gone. He then said not to worry, took my word that it was a year old and sent me a free Fed Ex shipping label via email. I printed it out and took it to a Fed Ex shipping place. Within one week, my son had a BRAND new DS. Or at least, it looks that way. They may have "refurbished" his old one, but this one looks brand new. The top screen that flips up, "flips" like a brand new one would. They also sent a letter that the warranty on this one was extended one full year. If this one goes out or I have any problems in the next year, Guess what? It goes back also. How cool is that? Just thought I'd share.
As a side note, we've also had really good customer service with Microsoft for Xbox. My husband had the dreaded 3 rings of death about a year ago on his almost 3 year old system. We called them, they sent us a shipping label and we had a new system in no time. I guess they figure they make most of their money on the continued purchasing of the video games (and they are right!)
